Our client is a real estate organization with a REIT and third-party investors, and a finance team that plays a central role in how the business is run and reported.
They are looking for an Assistant Manager, Corporate Accounting to join their management team and help lead financial and corporate reporting, internal controls, and performance measurement across the organization.
About the Role
We are looking for an accounting leader to support the direct supervision of all financial and corporate reporting, internal controls, and performance measurement. As an integral member of the management team, you will work alongside the other finance managers to identify, manage, and implement improvements and guide the team through change.
You will lead and mentor a team of direct and indirect reports while collaborating across the finance department and the wider company to deliver on goals and objectives. This is a strong opportunity for an accounting professional with public practice and industry experience who wants broad ownership across reporting, controls, and process improvement.
Responsibilities
- Oversee preparation of annual financial statements to meet internal and external reporting requirements
- Manage the external auditors and the financial statement audit to ensure timely completion
- Oversee quarterly financial reports and KPI dashboards for internal management review
- Oversee reporting and distributions to third-party investors
- Review financial statements and reports for reasonability and accuracy
- Analyze financial results, including profits, trends, budget, variances, and forecast, and communicate findings to senior management
- Support senior management with financial analysis and information for key decisions
- Direct all aspects of accounting operations and oversee all general ledger and financial reporting transactions
- Ensure recurring journal entries and bank reconciliations are properly prepared and reviewed
- Approve online banking transactions, including transfers, wires, and direct deposits, and ensure EFTs are prepared and approved
- Advise on complex or new GAAP accounting issues as they arise
- Oversee the corporate accounting team, and train and mentor staff
- Work with the other finance managers to keep the finance groups cohesive and effective
- Identify, document, and implement internal controls, processes, and accounting policies to strengthen governance and create efficiency
- Oversee the company's REIT and investor management as required
- Identify and implement process improvements to maximize the efficiency of the accounting group
- Support and lead system improvements in conjunction with IT and other stakeholders
- Manage the annual corporate budget process
Qualifications
Required
- Degree or designation in accounting (CA, CPA, CGA, or CMA)
- Public practice and industry background in corporate or managerial accounting
- Experience with complex financial reporting, including consolidations
- Experience with corporate reporting, including business units, KPIs, and budgeting
- Strong knowledge of ASPE and REALpac
- Proficiency with accounting systems (Excel is critical)
- Strong decision making, communication (verbal and written), and analytical skills
- Strong work ethic, sense of responsibility, and respect for confidentiality
- Organized self-starter who is attentive to detail and able to work independently
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with competing priorities
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute effectively within a team
Preferred
- Experience in real estate or a related industry, with a preference for construction and development accounting
- Timberline experience (an asset)
