The Labour Board is an independent adjudicative body established under the Labour Board Act. We are responsible for the fair and efficient administration and adjudication of responsibilities assigned to us under the Labour Board Act and sections of other Acts and Regulations.

About Our Opportunity

As Labour Board Officer, you will play an important role in promoting and supporting positive employee and labour relations practices in the Province of Nova Scotia.

The Labour Board must be, and be seen to be, unbiased and have the confidence and trust of the citizens of Nova Scotia to ensure the province has a sound labour and employee relations forum in which to address disputes. As a Labour Board Officer, you will be responsible for carrying out all duties in an unbiased, fair and impartial manner that ensures neutrality and supports the highest level of institutional independence required for adjudicative boards. You need to be sensitive to the impact that a positive and stable labour and employee relations setting has on economic and social development in the province.

As Labour Board Officer you will report to the Executive Officer, Nova Scotia Labour Board.

Primary Accountabilities

As Labour Board Officer you will be accountable for efficiently and effectively managing cases adjudicated by the Labour Board in a timely manner in accordance with the Trade Union Act, Labour Standards Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act, and other labour and employment statutes within the jurisdiction of the Labour Board.

You will be accountable for conducting and counting certification votes, as well as conducting interviews on matters involving inclusions and exclusion from bargaining units under the Trade Union Act.

You will also be accountable for conducting research, gathering, analyzing, and summarizing information, and preparing reports and presentations, as required.

You may also lead projects/initiatives under the supervision of the Executive Officer or Chief Administrator.

Qualifications and Experience

This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a university degree from a relevant field of study with 3 years’ experience or an equivalent combination of education, work experience and training. You have previous experience in case management.

You have knowledge of labour and employment law as well as other workplace laws with a proven ability to analyze issues, facts and evidence in relation to relevant rules of procedures and law. You possess exceptional communication skills (written and verbal), with strong interpersonal and time management skills, often managing competing priorities.

You possess a positive and professional attitude with the ability to work as a member of a high-energy, results focused team. You are exceptionally detailed oriented with the proven ability to handle numerous tasks and critical thinking skills. You have an ability to deal with difficult people in a multi-faceted and stressful environment, communicating with tact and discretion in a clear, concise manner. You are proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook). You are comfortable working with confidential/sensitive matters and diverse issues.

While not required, it is considered an asset if you have experience with adjudicative boards/courts in labour and employment law.

Competencies required at this level of work are:
Analytical Thinking, Adaptability and, Flexibility, Attention to Detail, Outcome Focus, Effective Interactive Communication, Teamwork and Collaboration, and Intercultural and Diversity Proficiency.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Working Conditions

Your typical work week is 35 hours with 7-hour days. This position is office-based, with regular computer work. You may also be required to travel to various sites in Nova Scotia to conduct job-related duties.

The role requires sustained attention to detail and accuracy. You will often be required to manage multiple competing priorities and meet urgent deadlines. You may also deal with difficult or emotional situations and individuals.

Additional Information

This is a TERM employment opportunity with anticipated end date of Jun 14, 2027. The appointment status (‘term’, ‘temporary’ or ‘casual’) is dependent on the start date of the successful candidate.

Pay Grade: EC 07

Salary Range: $2,439.73 - $3,049.66 Bi-Weekly
