Work Arrangement: This is a hybrid position requiring candidates to work on-site at least 2 days per week at our office in Mississauga. The remaining days may be worked remotely, subject to team and business needs.

About the Role (Job Summary): McKesson Canada is seeking a strategic and business-oriented Legal Counsel to provide legal guidance on data governance, privacy, artificial intelligence (AI), digital innovation, and regulatory matters. This role partners closely with business leaders, technology teams, compliance professionals, and data stakeholders to support innovative healthcare solutions while ensuring compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and corporate policies.

The successful candidate will advise on privacy, data management, AI governance, and healthcare regulatory matters, helping the organization balance legal risk, business objectives, and emerging technology opportunities. This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer who enjoys partnering with the business, navigating complex regulatory environments, and supporting digital transformation initiatives.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities):

Provide legal counsel on data privacy, data governance, AI, digital innovation, and regulatory matters across McKesson Canada.

Advise on compliance with applicable privacy legislation, including PIPEDA, Quebec Law 25, and other relevant federal and provincial requirements.

Partner with business leaders to develop and implement data strategies that support business objectives while protecting sensitive information.

Support technology, analytics, and digital transformation initiatives by identifying legal risks and developing practical solutions.

Provide legal guidance on AI-enabled tools and emerging technologies, including governance, risk management, and responsible AI use.

Draft, review, and maintain policies, governance frameworks, and guidance related to privacy, data management, AI, and regulatory compliance.

Advise on privacy incidents, regulatory inquiries, access-to-information requests, and investigations.

Collaborate with Legal, Compliance, Privacy, IT, Digital, Data & Analytics, and business teams on strategic initiatives and risk management activities.

Monitor changes in privacy, healthcare, AI, and technology legislation and provide proactive guidance to stakeholders.

Deliver training and legal guidance to business and functional leaders on privacy, regulatory, and healthcare compliance requirements.

Support strategic business initiatives, product development, and customer-facing solutions from a legal and regulatory perspective.

Build strong partnerships across the organization and serve as a trusted legal advisor to business stakeholders.

Basic Requirements:

Law degree from an accredited institution.

Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.

2-5 years of relevant legal experience in privacy, regulatory, technology, healthcare, or data governance matters, gained in-house, private practice, or a combination of both.

Demonstrated experience advising on privacy and data protection laws.

Knowledge of data governance, information management, and data strategy principles.

Experience drafting, reviewing, and negotiating legal documents, policies, and governance frameworks.

Ability to assess legal risk and provide practical, business-focused legal advice.

Excellent judgment, communication, project leadership, and collaboration skills.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

Experience within healthcare, life sciences, pharmacy, retail healthcare, or other regulated industries.

Experience advising on AI governance, digital transformation, automation, or emerging technologies.

Familiarity with healthcare regulations, professional practice standards, and patient data considerations.

IAPP certification (CIPP/C, CIPM, CIPT, or equivalent).

Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills within complex, matrixed organizations.

Experience supporting technology contracting and digital platform initiatives.

Bilingualism in English and French is considered a strong asset.
