Job description

Are you a senior professional engineer with deep expertise in structural design for substations and industrial facilities?

Juno Engineering Canada Inc.

is seeking a

Senior Structural Engineer

to lead the analysis, design, and delivery of steel and concrete structures, foundations, buildings, and brownfield modifications for energy and infrastructure projects across Western Canada. About the Role

This position is responsible for leading structural engineering for greenfield and brownfield substations and industrial facilities. The role includes

design-basis development, structural analysis and detailing, equipment and building foundations, multidisciplinary integration, design review and authentication, construction support, and field engineering

. In this role, you will serve as a technical lead and trusted client advisor, guiding project teams from concept and FEED through detailed design, procurement, construction, and closeout while maintaining control of safety, quality, scope, schedule, and technical risk. At

Juno

, we empower our team to drive sustainable progress across power generation, renewable energy, and advanced industrial projects. With over 40 years of engineering excellence, we foster a collaborative, forward-thinking culture where your leadership in structural engineering will help deliver resilient, constructible facilities that support Canada's energy and industrial infrastructure. Key Responsibilities

Structural Design and Technical Leadership

Lead concept, FEED, and detailed structural design for greenfield and brownfield substations, switchyards, control buildings, and industrial facilities. Establish structural design criteria and load cases and perform or review analysis for dead, live, wind, snow, ice, seismic, thermal, equipment, crane, impact, and dynamic loads as applicable. Develop safe and economical designs in structural steel, reinforced concrete, masonry, and cold-formed steel, including brownfield strengthening and rehabilitation solutions. Substation and Industrial Facility Structures

Design equipment support structures, bus supports, dead-end structures, gantries, control and electrical buildings, firewalls, pipe racks, platforms, stairs, shelters, skids, modules, and access structures. Lead design of transformer and equipment foundations, building foundations, pile caps, slabs, anchor systems, trenches, vaults, containment structures, retaining elements, and other structural interfaces. Assess existing structures and foundations, define field-verification requirements, evaluate modifications or changes in loading, and develop practical repair, reinforcement, or replacement recommendations. Project Delivery and Client Coordination

Define engineering scope, deliverables, estimates, schedules, resource requirements, design-review plans, and discipline execution strategies. Lead multidisciplinary coordination with electrical, protection and controls, civil, geotechnical, mechanical, piping, process, architectural, project-management, client, utility, and vendor teams. Prepare and review design criteria, calculations, analysis models, technical reports, specifications, drawings, material take-offs, construction work packages, and shop or vendor submittals. Support proposals, client presentations, scope development, cost estimating, and the growth of long-term utility, energy, and industrial-sector relationships. Construction, Field Review, and Closeout

Provide senior technical support during procurement, fabrication, construction, and turnover, including resolution of RFIs, non-conformances, substitutions, field changes, and constructability issues. Conduct site reviews and structural condition assessments, support inspection and testing requirements, and oversee record drawings, as-built documentation, deficiency closeout, and lessons learned. Quality, Safety, and Team Leadership

Authenticate engineering deliverables within professional competency and ensure compliance with applicable building codes, CSA standards, utility and client requirements, and Juno's quality-management requirements. Apply safety-in-design, constructability, maintainability, durability, and lifecycle-risk principles and lead disciplined independent and interdisciplinary reviews. Mentor engineers and designers, develop structural standards and calculation tools, and foster consistent engineering practices across multidisciplinary project teams. Qualifications

Education and Licensure

Bachelor's degree

in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or an equivalent accredited engineering program. Registered

Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)

in Alberta or another Canadian province and eligible for registration with APEGA. Experience

10+ years

of progressive structural engineering experience, with substantial responsibility for utility, energy, or heavy industrial structures and foundations. Demonstrated experience as a technical lead on multidisciplinary greenfield or brownfield projects involving substations, industrial facilities, or comparable infrastructure. Experience managing design scope, technical risk, client and vendor interfaces, procurement support, construction support, field review, and project closeout. Technical Skills

Advanced knowledge of structural steel, reinforced concrete, foundations, equipment supports, buildings, pipe racks, platforms, seismic design, dynamic loading, and modifications to existing structures. Proficiency with STAAD.Pro, S-FRAME, SAP2000, SAFE, RISA, or equivalent structural analysis software; working experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, and Bluebeam is desirable. Strong capability in technical writing, calculation development and checking, design review, specifications, cost estimating, scope development, schedule and resource planning, and client communication. Experience with Western Canadian utilities, transmission-class substations, equipment support structures, control buildings, transformer foundations, firewalls, and oil-containment systems. Experience with industrial equipment foundations, pipe racks, modular or skid structures, brownfield facility modifications, rotating equipment, or blast-resistant design. Experience applying IEEE 693, ASCE, AISC, ACI, or U.S. jurisdictional criteria, and supporting fabrication, construction, condition assessments, or rehabilitation work. Success in This Role Will Require

Decisive technical leadership, sound professional judgement, and disciplined management of structural and project risk. Ability to translate complex loading, geotechnical, equipment, and multidisciplinary interfaces into clear, coordinated, constructible, and commercially responsible solutions. Strong client-facing communication, mentoring, quality-control, and project-execution capabilities. A collaborative spirit aligned with Juno's values of Connect, Cultivate, Create. Location & Travel

This position is based in Calgary, Alberta, with flexible work arrangements available. Applicants must be able to work full-time in Canada and be available for periodic multi-day travel to client offices, substations, industrial facilities, fabrication shops, and project sites across Western Canada.
