Hourly Rate of Pay: $38.03 per hour, as per Schedule "A" of CUPE collective agreement (September 1, 2025)

• In accordance with the current CUPE collective agreement.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

CHILD AND YOUTH WORKER Title: Child and Youth Worker

Reports to: Principal/Mental Health Lead

Supervises: Not applicable

Location: As assigned Position Identification: School Support

Position Summary:

In accordance with the Board Special Education Plan, support students who require extensive social,

emotional and behavioural assistance. This position assists with the development of programming for

students, provides support, behaviour management strategies and social or life skill instruction.

Position Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Mental Health Lead and Principal, the incumbent works in partnership

within the school as a whole, interacting with other staff members of the school, parents and professional or social service agencies. When required, the incumbent will serve as a Board resource to other schools and students within the Board.

The Child and Youth Worker must be an excellent communicator with the ability to apply a variety of

communication techniques. The ability to follow oral and written directions, multi-task, maintain confidential information and organize work time effectively is required. The Child and Youth Worker is

required to have a good understanding of managing and preventing aggressive behaviours. The Child and

Youth Worker must have excellent supervisory skills. Good problem solving and judgement skills are required. The incumbent must be able to exercise sound, independent judgment and discretion in

carrying out the requirements of the job. The Child and Youth Worker must be flexible in order to

accommodate changing needs and schedules of students. A good understanding of school policies,

procedures and emergency plans is required. The Child and Youth Worker is required to work with safety in mind at all times. The incumbent is required to participate in and deliver Board professional development when required.

Position Duties: • Works in partnership with outside agencies at the discretion of the Mental Health Lead and in

conjunction with the School Counsellors and the Multi-Disciplinary Team.

• Provides support and implements proactive strategies to high needs behaviour students by providing programming to children who are dealing with a wide range of social, emotional or behavioural challenges.

• Facilitates social emotional learning in each classroom, using Board approved classroom

interventions.

• Facilitates nutrition break programming.

• Provides both preventative and intervention support.

• Works with groups of students to teach life skills, behaviour, social and coping skills.

• Focuses on in-class presentations (i.e. self-esteem, social skills, anti-bullying, mindfulness,

healthy lifestyles).

• Prepares reports and maintains records pursuant to the policies, procedure and legislation.

• Works in collaboration with the Autism and Positive Behaviour Support Lead to develop programs specific to each child.

• Assists school staff to develop and implement safety plans to ensure the safety for all.

• Communicates student needs and progress to appropriate individuals.

• Attends meetings and case conferences as required.

• Abides by applicable legislation, Board policies and procedures with respect to access, use or

disclosure of student and Board information.

• All other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

The incumbent works in a classroom environment and/or throughout the school with frequent exposure to behaviourally difficult students, interruptions, noise, colds and viruses. The Child and Youth Worker is

occasionally exposed to inclement weather, mucus, vomit and other bodily fluids. The Child and Youth Worker is occasionally required to use CPI interventions including lifting, blocking, restraining and

observing.

Qualifications: This position requires a Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with the completion of a three

(3) year Diploma in Child and Youth Care. CPI training, First Aid Certification and experience supporting children with autism is required. The incumbent must be able to plan and work to achieve department goals and desired outcomes. A minimum of one (1) year experience is required.
