Job description

The Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club (“the Club”) is the city’s premier racquets, fitness, and social Club. Located just a few minutes from downtown, the Club offers exceptional tennis, badminton, squash, fitness and aquatics programming for over 4,000 members, along with a variety of social events with upscale-casual dining in 3 restaurants.

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as Human Resources Manager.

Scope:

The Human Resources Manager, under the direction of the General Manager, is primarily responsible for the development & implementation of Human Resource programs, policies and initiatives, full cycle recruitment and promoting Vancouver Lawn's culture.

The Team is approximately 111 Employees which consists of 69 unionized and 42 non-union Employees.

The position is also responsible for overseeing wage increases, promotions, disciplinary actions and staffing requirements in a unionized environment, and serves as the Club's lead on labour relations matters, including collective bargaining agreement administration, grievance handling and negotiation support.

Wage: Salaried position, $90,000.00 - $110,000.00 per annum based on background and experience.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plans and manages the recruitment, interviewing, hiring and orientation processes to maintain staffing levels with qualified individuals.
  • Acts as liaison between Club Employees and Leadership Team.
  • Plans and coordinates Employee events.
  • Monitors and follows up on Employee health or injury related absences.
  • Supports and coaches Club Leadership to ensure application of human resources practices, the Collective Agreement, legislations, programs and policies.
  • Provide leadership and coaching to Managers and Employees on key workplace matters such as performance management, difficult conversations, employee relations and employee development.
  • Assist in reward and recognition programs and training strategies.
  • Assists with the design, implementation and ongoing delivery of Human Resource programs.
  • Administration of progressive disciplinary action through coaching and counseling to improve performance or recommend termination of employment.
  • Research, analyze and make recommendations for compensation and benefits.
  • Manages progressive, corrective action process.
  • Formulates budgets for employee relations, staff training and recruitment advertising and manages expenses for the human resources department.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of employee records, files and human resource office systems.
  • Is involved in union negotiations and putting forward recommendations and guidance.
  • Facilitates a culture of commitment to the company's values, standards, operating philosophies and overall business strategy.
  • Work with Leadership Team to identify areas of improvement for Employees, providing additional training as needed.
  • Identify and implement leadership development opportunities.
  • Develop and update Employee handbook as required.
  • Handle employee complaints and incidents, including conflict resolution, accidents, health and safety concerns, work refusals and investigations.
  • Work with the Assistant Controller for the purpose of ensuring compliance with established financial, legal and administrative requirements and effective department functioning.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Labour Relations:

  • Serves as the Club's primary point of contact for the administration and day-to-day interpretation of the Collective Agreement with UNITE HERE! Local 40.
  • Leads or supports the Club's negotiating committee in collective bargaining, including preparing proposals, costing analysis and briefing materials for the Leadership Team and Board.
  • Manages the grievance procedure from intake through resolution, including investigation, documentation, response drafting and, where required, representation at arbitration.
  • Advises the General Manager and Leadership Team on rights, obligations and risk under the Collective Agreement and the BC Labour Relations Code.
  • Monitors labour relations trends, arbitral case law and legislative changes affecting the Club, and recommends policy or practice adjustments accordingly.
  • Builds and maintains a constructive working relationship with the Union, including regular labour-management meetings.
  • Prepares and maintains labour relations records, precedent files and correspondence to support consistency across disciplinary, grievance and bargaining matters.
  • Coordinates with legal counsel on labour relations matters, including collective bargaining, grievances, arbitrations and Labour Relations Board proceedings, as required.
  • Develops contingency and workforce planning in the event of a labour disruption, including strike or lockout preparedness.
  • Delivers training to Managers on collective agreement rights and obligations, progressive discipline, and grievance avoidance.

Experience:

  • 3-5 years of progressively responsible human resources experience.
  • Previous hospitality experience a definite asset.
  • Previous HR experience in a union environment is a definite must.
  • Demonstrated experience administering a collective agreement, handling grievances and supporting collective bargaining is required.
  • Experience representing an employer at arbitration or before a labour relations board is an asset.

Requirements:

  • Post-secondary diploma/degree in human resources/business an asset.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office, Excel, presentation software and email.
  • Certification in HR Management preferred (CPHR designation an asset).
  • Strong working knowledge of HR theories, practices, legislation and resources.
  • Able to interpret and implement personnel-related legislation.
  • Strong working knowledge of the BC Labour Relations Code and labour/employment-related legislation.
  • Demonstrated experience in labour relations, including collective bargaining and grievance/arbitration processes.
