Enhanced Guard – Nunavut Health Program (Fly-In/Fly-Out)

The Enhanced Guards (EG) provide exemplary coaching and mentoring to community security personnel, and foster positive relationships with medical staff, local law enforcement personnel and other community stakeholders. They bring crisis management and de-escalation skills to the Health Centres at which they are assigned.

About the Position and Working Conditions

Our program supports full time, part-time and casual/on-call positions supporting healthcare facilities across Nunavut.

Successful completion of an extensive background check is required.

Casual employees are expected to fill a minimum of two rotations per calendar year, which may be in different communities. Casual employees may also be required to fill last-minute rotations with limited notice.

As this position is located in Northern Canada, there may be disruptions due to weather or other conditions. Flexibility is essential.

• Travel to different sites may be required
• Shifts are typically 12 hours (day and night rotations; schedules may vary based on operational needs) - rotation lengths are 28 days
• Uniform provided

This position may include long periods of facility overwatch, routine patrols, and operational support. Candidates must be able to recognize escalating behaviours, apply de-escalation techniques, and, when necessary, maintain the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.

Responsibilities

• Providing access control to the Health Centre
• Conducting routine security patrols internally and externally
• Ensuring the safe movement of individuals inside the Health Centre
• Dealing with individuals displaying uncooperative and disruptive behaviour
• Providing overwatch in potentially volatile interactions between patients/visitors and medical staff
• Providing ongoing leadership, coaching and mentoring to community security personnel when required
• Assisting medical staff when dealing with emergencies and/or when providing medical treatment to a patient as needed
• Assisting RCMP with the movement of individuals within the facilities
• Providing written statements to the RCMP when required
• Attending to any infrastructure deficiencies and alerting maintenance staff
• Ensuring that Public Health measures are followed
• Maintaining daily occurrence logs and preparing weekly, monthly and other reports
• Creating incident reports for more serious occurrences
• Assisting in morgue facilities as needed
• Transporting and escorting medical personnel in the community as needed
• Other duties as required, such as assisting with general operational and patient support duties

Requirements

• Minimum 15 years of service with a law enforcement background (police, sheriff, corrections)
• Experience working in First Nations and Inuit communities is strongly preferred
• A calming demeanour and an exceptional ability to de-escalate volatile situations
• Extensive experience interacting with individuals under the influence of drugs or alcohol and with those affected by mental illness
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to accurately articulate a given situation
• The ability to write clear, concise and complete written reports to the standard that a third-party reader will have a full understanding of what occurred
• Exceptional situational awareness and the ability to recognize signs of escalating aggression in individuals
• The ability to exercise discretion and safeguard confidential information
• An understanding that security, in its different forms, is a component of the medical care delivery model
• The ability to engage with community members during working and non-working hours
• The insight to be proactive in identifying security issues and suggesting solutions
• A willingness to lend a hand in situations that are not necessarily security-related
• A willingness to work in a harsh environment, particularly during the winter months, and to be away from home for up to four weeks at a time
• Professional demeanour and commitment to representing SSRG to the highest standards
• Computer literacy and fluency in Microsoft Office applications
