Position Title:Senior Electrical Engineer

Location:Regina, SK

Reporting to: Manager, Generation Technical Services

Our Client

SaskPower is more than Saskatchewan's electric utility, it is one of the organizations helping power the province's future.

Serving more than half a million customers across one of Canada's largest and most geographically diverse service territories, SaskPower generates, transmits, and distributes electricity to homes, businesses, industries, and communities throughout Saskatchewan. From major urban centres to remote communities, its infrastructure supports the daily lives of residents and the growth of the province's economy.

As Saskatchewan's energy needs continue to evolve, SaskPower is investing in the modernization of its generation fleet, transmission network, and operational technologies while balancing reliability, affordability, and sustainability. With a diverse portfolio that includes natural gas, hydroelectric, wind, solar, and conventional generation assets, the organization is helping lead one of the most significant energy transitions in the province's history.

What sets SaskPower apart is the scale and impact of its work. Engineers have the opportunity to contribute to complex, province-wide initiatives that directly influence critical infrastructure and long-term energy strategy. Whether supporting generation facilities, advancing system reliability, or helping shape the next generation of power solutions, employees play a meaningful role in work that affects communities across Saskatchewan every day.

The Opportunity

Reliable power doesn't happen by chance, it happens because skilled engineers make the right decisions behind the scenes every day.

As SaskPower's Senior Engineer, Electrical, you'll provide technical leadership for the electrical systems that support Saskatchewan's generating stations. From generator excitation systems and DC battery systems to plant electrical distribution and arc flash mitigation, your expertise will help ensure critical infrastructure operates safely, reliably, and efficiently.

Working closely with operations teams, contractors, consultants, and fellow engineers, you'll lead technical studies, support major capital projects, develop engineering standards, and provide guidance through construction and commissioning activities. You'll also have opportunities to travel to generating stations across the province, ensuring engineering solutions are practical, effective, and aligned with operational needs.

Beyond supporting individual projects, you'll play an important role in shaping engineering practices, standards, and methodologies that influence how SaskPower approaches technical challenges across its generation fleet.

Key Responsibilities

As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will work collaboratively and are responsible for:

1. Technical Engineering Leadership

  • Lead technical studies, investigations, engineering assessments, and business case development for generation facilities.
  • Provide specialized expertise related to industrial and power generation electrical systems.
  • Conduct technical and economic evaluations of alternative solutions and provide recommendations that support strategic investment decisions.
  • Develop and contribute to business cases that support capital projects and long-term asset management initiatives.
  • Provide ongoing engineering support to generating station operations, maintenance, and reliability programs.

2. Electrical Systems & Asset Management

  • Provide technical leadership for plant electrical distribution systems, DC battery systems, and generator excitation systems.
  • Conduct or oversee arc flash studies, mitigation initiatives, and electrical safety assessments.
  • Support asset management strategies and lifecycle planning for critical generation equipment.
  • Develop and maintain engineering standards, specifications, and best practices.
  • Manage project plans, budgets, schedules, and technical deliverables.
  • Provide engineering support throughout project execution, including design reviews, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
  • Provide contract management and technical coordination services for consultants, contractors, and external technical agencies.
  • Manage external technical resources to ensure project objectives, quality standards, and schedules are achieved.

4. Stakeholder & Team Leadership

  • Direct and provide technical guidance to engineers, technologists, consultants, and contractors.
  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, construction, and project management teams.
  • Support knowledge sharing and mentoring initiatives within the engineering group.
  • Build strong working relationships across SaskPower’s generation and corporate teams.

5. Safety, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

  • Demonstrate leadership in fostering a culture focused on safety, innovation, accountability, and teamwork across all project and operational activities.
  • Ensure engineering activities comply with applicable regulations, standards, and utility requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance reliability, efficiency, and operational performance.
  • Contribute to cybersecurity and compliance initiatives where applicable, including Operational Technology (OT) and NERC/CIP-related activities.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

The Essentials (Hard Skills)

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility for membership with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan (APEGS).
  • Minimum six (6) years of post-P.Eng. engineering experience.
  • Experience planning, designing, constructing, commissioning, operating, or maintaining complex industrial or utility facilities.
  • Experience supporting DC battery systems and generator excitation systems and plant electrical distribution systems.
  • Experience performing or overseeing arc flash analysis and mitigation programs.
  • Demonstrated project management, commissioning, and technical leadership experience.
  • Strong understanding of engineering standards, design practices, and asset management principles and coordinating the technical aspects of complex projects and contracts.
  • Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to SaskPower generating stations as required.

The Intangibles (Soft Skills)

  • Proven ability to coach, mentor, and develop engineers, engineers-in-training, technologists, and technical staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships across multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders.
  • Experience providing guidance and expertise on complex technical issues in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Collaborative approach with a commitment to teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and focused on achieving operational excellence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with NERC/CIP compliance programs.
  • Knowledge of Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity principles and practices.
  • Experience working within utility, power generation, or heavy industrial environments.
