Job Summary

If supervising the activities of construction projects – from working drawings through to the end of the guarantee period – is among your strengths, consider joining the Design & Construction Department in the role of Project Manager. Reporting to the Manager of Design & Construction, the Project Manager reviews architectural, mechanical, electrical, structural, landscape, site servicing and construction schedules, preliminary and tender drawings, specifications and tender documents, and ensures the timely, on‑budget completion of capital, renovation and renewal projects identified under the Board’s long term accommodation plan. This posting is for a backfill/replacement.

Key Responsibilities

We are seeking a leader who embraces accountability, human rights and equity in a highly visible role. You will bring progressive leadership experience managing construction projects from schematic design until completion, with deep knowledge of relevant construction documents and contracts. Candidates are required to possess a strong knowledge of building science, construction administration, construction budgets, specification documents, costing analysis and relevant regulatory codes (Ontario Building Code, Fire Code, Electrical, etc.) and standards. As Project Manager, you will prepare construction tenders, recommend acceptance of, or changes to, working drawings and specifications for assigned projects, and monitor the performance of architects, consultants and contractors to ensure adherence to standards and regulations. You will make on‑the‑spot decisions as required, demonstrate a proven track record of managing multiple projects concurrently, liaise with contractors, architects, government officials, school principals and other Board staff, manage hazardous materials, promote environmental health and safety, compile a comprehensive design history of external architects and consultants, research new construction concepts and systems, and develop and recommend standards and specifications for the design process. You will also communicate with the Board solicitor on matters relating to the Ontario Construction Act and prepare reports for the Board of Trustees and its committees.

Qualifications

  • Post‑secondary degree/diploma in engineering or architecture with extensive experience in institutional/commercial buildings or an equivalent combination of relevant post‑secondary education and experience. Current certification as an engineer or architect, licensed to practice in Ontario, is an asset. Prior experience in managing school construction projects from design to post‑completion close‑out is preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience in progressively responsible positions and working knowledge of all related trade disciplines in construction.
  • Hands‑on project management experience essential; excellent skills in managing several concurrent new construction and building renovation projects.
  • Knowledge of relevant building codes, engineering standards and practices, health and safety legislation and Ministry of Labour standards.
  • Excellent technical, presentation, public engagement and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Understanding of building science and construction methodologies and materials.
  • Demonstrated coordination, project management, initiative, decision making, problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Excellent budget management, organizational and analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience in site meetings to ensure work is performed according to contract documentation, and coordination with site administrators on project status and progress.
  • Strong financial experience in managing large capital budgets and multiple concurrent projects.
  • Preparation, monitoring and forecasting of construction budgets and project expenditures.
  • Experience in building and maintaining effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders on construction projects, such as municipalities, consultants, contractors, Ministry of Education staff, internal Board departments and other stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in computer programs including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, AutoCAD, and/or Revit. Familiarity with project management tools such as Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud or similar is an asset.
  • Must possess your own vehicle and have a valid driver’s licence.

Additional Skills & Assets

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) accreditation from Project Management Institute (PMI).
  • P. Eng (licensed Professional Engineer of Ontario) or Architect (Ontario Association of Architects) or OAAAS (Ontario Association of Applied Architectural Sciences).
  • Minimum level of education required: University Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Planning, Finance or Project Management.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of Construction Law and C.C.D.C. (Canadian Construction Documents Committee) legislation.
  • Working in Heights Training Certificate.

Additional Notes

Preference will be given to qualified members of the Administrative Staff Group (ASG).

Commitment to Equity, Anti‑Oppression and Anti‑Racism

The Peel District School Board is committed to equity in employment. We are committed to equitable hiring practices that allow us to hire qualified staff who reflect the full diversity of the Region of Peel. We will provide reasonable accommodation, such as an accessible location or rescheduling of interviews, based on any of the human rights protected grounds, during the hiring process if advised in advance. We are also committed to inclusion, anti‑oppression and anti‑racist practices while supporting the continuous growth and development of an equitable and empowered education system at the PDSB.

Criminal Background Check

Successful candidates must provide a satisfactory Criminal Background Check prior to commencing employment. Please review the requirements for the Criminal Background Check.

Land Acknowledgement

The land upon which we work, live and sustain ourselves is the ancestral and treaty lands of the Miichizaagiig Anishinaabek, also known today as the Mississaugas of the Credit, the rightful caretakers and title holders of this land. We also recognize the rich pre‑contact history and relationships which include the Anishinaabek and the Onkwehonwe. Since European Contact, this land continues to be home to Indigenous and non‑Indigenous peoples. As responsible community members, we value the diversity, dignity and worth of all people. Colonialism displaced and dispossessed Indigenous peoples of their ancestral lands and continues to deny their basic human rights, dignities and freedoms. We are committed to learning true history to reconcile, make reparations and fulfill our treaty obligations to the Original Peoples and our collective responsibilities to the land, water, animals, and each other for future generations.
