Position Title: Theme 3 Committee Co-Chair: Social and Population Health

Unit: Undergraduate Medical Education

Location: Sudbury or Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

Term: Up to three (3) years

The Theme Chair (or Co-Chairs) plays an important role in overseeing one of the five integrating themes in all four years of the NOSM University curriculum. This administrative position reports to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education and works cooperatively with all Theme Chairs.

Theme 3: Social and Population Health. This course has a focus on identification of the most important determinants of health and review of the important issues currently under discussion with respect to health care in Canada. Students will be required to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the principles of public health, health promotion, and health education and illness/disease prevention skills for individuals and communities. Students will carry out a community-based project in the context of the Aboriginal Integrated Community Experience.

Reporting The Theme 3 Committee Co-Chair reports to the Associate Dean, Undergraduate Medical Education.

Responsibilities

Provide leadership and direction to the Theme 3 Committee Members in development of all aspects of Theme 3 in the NOSM curriculum including student assessment.

Co-Chairs all Theme 3 Committee meetings.

Supervise Committee members in a collegial manner.

Attend meetings of the following committees: Phase 1 Committee (P1C);

Phase 2 Committee (P2C);

Phase 3 Committee (P3C);

Undergraduate Medical Education Committee (UMEC); and,

Undergraduate Medical Education Curriculum Committee (UMECC).

Only one Theme 3 Co-Chair is required to attend each meeting of the aforementioned committees.

The Theme 3 Co-Chair is not responsible for attending other committee meetings, including any meetings of sub-committees or working groups of the aforementioned committees; however, they may delegate such responsibilities to members of the Theme 3 Committee.

Qualifications Education

MD or PhD or equivalent in health or education field

Must have a Faculty Appointment or qualify for a Faculty Appointment in the Human, Medical or Clinical Sciences Division, ideally at the rank of Assistant Professor or above

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Experience in Social and Population Health

Minimum one (1) year of experience in a leadership position is required

Minimum one (1) year of experience in a leadership role within a committee is required

Experience in developing, managing and implementing medical school curriculum in an accredited medical school is an asset

Experience as a Theme Committee member

Evidence of strong leadership and decision-making skills is required

Evidence of superior communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills is required

Ability to communicate effectively in English is required

Ability to communicate in French would be a considerable asset

Ability to communicate in Ojibway and/or Cree would be a considerable asset

Evidence of ability to be an effective team player and team leader is required

Knowledge of progressive approaches to leading change, problem-solving and conflict resolution is required

Language

Must be able to communicate effectively in English (verbally, written and comprehension)

French/Indigenous language skills would be considered asset

Remuneration

As per the Collective Agreement (i.e. teaching credits) or Faculty Handbook (i.e. payment rates)

Time Commitment

One-half (0.5) day per week
