Job description

At Kabam, we’re constantly raising the bar of excellence in free-to-play gaming. We hire for passion and diversity so that we can triumph in our collective skill. Our teams are made up of a fusion of personalities and interests bound together by a collaborative nature, fun-loving culture, and a drive to do what it takes to make great games. And this is where you come in…

We're looking for a Director of Production to join our team! In this key leadership role, you'll leverage a wealth of knowledge to establish better production practices, drive overall team mentorship, and ensure successful execution across projects. You'll be a vital partner, collaborating across all disciplines, feature groups, and with the Strategic Leaders of the company.

This role is a full-time, on-site position based 5 days a week at our Downtown Vancouver studio.

In this role, you can expect to:

  • Lead and develop, establish, and enhance best-practice production methodologies and tools across the studio
  • Balance product and team health to maximize business outcomes
  • Oversee both project management and production disciplines within the team
  • Lead headcount annual planning for the studio

Business Acumen & Leadership

  • Anticipate business issues to align operational priorities and allocate resources
  • Remain current on competitor products, industry trends and techniques in game design
  • Mentor the entire Production staff and serves as the primary advocate of the end customer
  • Champion the Production discipline at the studio level and is active in building and leading the Production team
  • Regularly participate in 1:1s with employees, as well as in the staffing, recruitment, onboarding and performance review processes throughout the year.

Problem Solving and Decision Making

  • Work on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of organizational objectives. Implements strategic policies when selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Establish and assure adherence to budgets, schedules, work plans, and performance requirements. Define problems and empower teams to figure out their own solutions.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Collaborate with People Business Partners, Resource Management Office, and Finance teams to take primary responsibility for studio resource planning
  • Foster a respectful work environment through encouraging collaboration and appreciation of diversity through all levels of the organization; be able to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from, others in sensitive situations, without damage to the relationship.
  • Communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner with all levels of internal staff and external technology partners as applicable.
  • Act as a connector, linking senior leadership to employees through open communication to ensure all parties remain informed by appropriately communicating down organization information and rolling up feedback from the team.
  • Influence Kabam Worldwide and external groups to achieve studio goals; achieves studio consent and buy-in.
  • Effectively communicate timely feedback and feedforward to support the growth of your employees.

Leadership

  • Owner of the entire Production team; member of game leads group and studio senior leadership.
  • Align staffing and budgeting to strategic planning, capturing short and long term objectives
  • Manage activities of two or more sections or functions through a team of producers. Recommend, champion and implement organizational changes.

Resource Management

  • Be responsible for the development and headcount budget for the game
  • Be responsible for allocating resources to different functional areas of the game

To be successful in this role, your background includes:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or greater; specialized designation in either project management, team leadership, production or other relevant discipline.
  • A strong understanding of technologies associated with game development and production (capabilities and limitations)
  • 10+ years in gaming or entertainment production, with 5+ years in a leadership role, in a mid or large sized organization
  • 7+ years in a product development role
  • Shipped at least one game through product development cycle
  • Direct experience producing all major game phases (e.g. concept, pre-production, production, live production). Experience producing live production
  • A transformative leadership style, seeks to grow and mentor their teams, not simply manage them
  • Experience of growing a healthy and successful delivery team in video games, software, technology, or a similar field.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills paired with solid presentation and public speaking skills.

Our Success (Benefits)

Our success is due to the hard work of our people. We share our success with our people through flexible benefits and reward programs, sweet swag, snacks, and more. Here’s a look at some of the support we provide our people:

  • Extended Health Coverage: effective day one, no waiting period! Our benefits cover health, dental, life, disability, and extended paramedical services such as vision care, mental health practitioners, massage, physiotherapy, acupuncture, and much more.
  • DEIB Benefits: DEIB is important to us and to our people - that’s why our benefits include gender-affirming care, fertility care, and other hormonal treatments and drugs.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts: our benefits are built on a flex credit model, so you’re able to choose the coverage levels that are right for you, and allocate the rest to a group RRSP/TFSA, Health Spending account, and/or Personal Spending Account.
  • RRSP Matching: everyone retires eventually, and we help our people save for their futures with a contribution matching program once you reach 90 days with us.
  • PTO and Parental Leave: we offer paid parental leave, flexible paid time off, paid time off for volunteering, sick leave, and holiday closures.
  • Employee and Family Assistance Program: this program provides crisis management support, immediate mental health care, and generalized support for emotional, mental, and financial well-being.
  • Telus Virtual Health: we provide increased access to remote healthcare providers for prescription refills or referrals from the comfort of your home.
  • Learning and growth: We encourage people to grow both personally and professionally, and support this through regular lunch & learns and an education stipend.
  • Pay transparency: We share with employees the pay range their role falls within and clear career maps to determine how they can grow within their role or level-up to a promotion.
  • Cool spaces: Our offices are in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Montreal, Prince Edward Island, and Seoul. Whether it’s summers on the rooftop patio in Downtown Vancouver, watching the fireworks in Montreal’s South Shore, or trying local eats in Downtown Charlottetown - we want our people to feel like their time spent in office is worthwhile!
  • Giving back: Kabammers have a dedicated paid day off every year to volunteer to a cause close to their hearts. Some teams even band together for group volunteer days off-site!

$118,400 - $177,600 a year

The typical hiring range listed above is specific to candidates located in Vancouver. The salary will be determined based on your knowledge, skills and competencies, and you’ll have room to grow after you join!

If you’re interested in the position but your expectations don’t fully align with the provided range, we still encourage you to apply! Considerations may be made based on your experience level.

Excited by this opportunity? Kabam is dedicated to growing our diverse and inclusive workforce, so if your past experience doesn’t perfectly match the listed requirements we encourage you to apply anyways - you could be a great fit for this or other positions.
