• Heavy Equipment Technician
• to join our shop. This is a role for a skilled tradesperson who enjoys variety, takes pride in high-quality mechanical work, and wants to see the direct impact of their expertise on the streets of the city they serve.Reporting to the Lead, Fleet Services, the Heavy Equipment Technician, is the primary expert responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining the City’s diverse fleet of mobile and stationary equipment.This isn't your average "assembly line" shop. You will work on a massive range of assets—everything from small engines and automotive units to complex heavy-duty yellow iron and transit buses. You’ll be a technical problem-solver who ensures our departments have the tools they need to serve our citizens safely and efficiently.In this hands-on role, you will be the go-to expert for mechanical integrity across the organization. You will :
• Master a diverse fleet by troubleshooting and repairing complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems on everything from heavy-duty yellow iron to stationary municipal equipment.
• Lead preventative maintenance and safety by performing critical CVIP inspections, daily pre-trips, and manufacturer-specified service schedules to keep our fleet road legal and safe for the public.
• Provide frontline field support by responding to equipment failures on-site when required, ensuring minimal disruption to City services and making real-time decisions on the most effective repair strategies.
• Mentor the next generation of talent by providing technical guidance to apprentices and co-workers, sharing your expertise in diagnosis and repair to build a stronger, more capable team.
• Consult on fleet strategy by providing feedback to supervisors and other departments on equipment performance, helping to guide future selection, operation, and lifecycle planning.
• Bridge the gap between shop and operations by partnering with equipment operators to gather detailed feedback on issues, ensuring repairs are precise and operators are trained on proper handling.
• Drive shop excellence and continuity by managing repair records, maintaining specialized shop tools, and taking ownership of parts organization to ensure a safe and highly efficient workspace.
• Stay at the cutting edge of the trade by attending seminars and engaging in self-study to remain current with new technology, ensuring our shop is always ready for the next generation of equipment.You are a diagnostic pro who thrives on the challenge of "fixing the unfixable" and brings a versatile mechanical background to the table. You have :
• A Journeyman Heavy Equipment Technician designation (on-road and off-road preferred), though we will consider Apprentices in their final year.
• At least 2–3 years of experience in the trade, ideally with exposure to the diverse machinery found in a municipal setting.
• Experience maintaining everything from heavy-duty yellow iron to small engines and automotive units.
• A valid Class 3 Driver’s License with airbrake endorsement and the ability to obtain a license for Commercial Vehicle Inspections.
• The communication skills needed to coach apprentices and explain technical findings clearly to different teams.
• The physical and mental resilience required to tackle deep troubleshooting in both the shop and the field.
