Job description

The Opportunity :

Make a real impact by volunteering on a City Board. As a member, you’ll take part in formal decision-making, help shape outcomes on important local matters, and contribute to fair and transparent processes that affect your community.

The City of Airdrie has a Subdivision and Development Appeal Board (SDAB) which is an independent quasi-judicial board made up of one Council representative and citizen members. The SDAB handles appeals of the decisions of the Municipal Planning Commission or of the approving authority regarding development permit or subdivision applications.

We are looking for 4 citizen members from the community to fill volunteer positions on our Subdivision and Development Appeal Board (SDAB).

Please be aware that this is a volunteer opportunity and is not considered an employment position with the City of Airdrie.

Appointment : Council appoints to the Board at Council’s annual Organizational Meeting.

Reports to : Council

Mandated by : The Subdivision and Development Appeal Board Bylaw (found ).

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE :

  • In panels of 3 or 5, hear appeals, and render decisions.
  • Prepare for hearings in advance with information received from the Clerks.
  • Attend yearly SDAB Annual General Meeting
  • Attend mandatory legislated training every 3 years.

YOU BRING :

  • Experience in operation of quasi-judicial boards or administrative tribunals and / or bodies which make decisions.
  • Experience in the development industry, urban planning, or city planning policy.
  • The ability to read, understand and apply The Municipal Government Act and other legislation, statutory plans.
  • The ability to participate in hearings with an open mind, making decisions in a fair and unbiased manner.
  • OTHER INFORMATION & VOLUNTEER COMMITMENTS :

  • Meetings will be held in-person at City Hall in Airdrie at 400 Main St SE.
  • Members are expected to attend meetings in person, but accommodation to attend virtually can be made if required.
  • Approximate time commitment : Approximately 5–10 hours per month
  • Hearings take place every third Thursday at 9 : 00 am and 1 : 00 pm

    Eligibility

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Current resident of the City of Airdrie.
  • Not be currently employed by the City of Airdrie or have been employed by the city within the last 12 months.
  • Not be a former City of Airdrie elected official within the last 12 months.
  • Willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement and obtain a satisfactory enhanced security check.
  • Not be a current employee of or is currently in a contractual agreement with :
  • the Royal Canadian Mounted Police;
  • any federal, provincial, municipal police agency;
  • any peace officer agency;
  • an attorney general ministry; or
  • the solicitor general of Canada
  • WE OFFER :
