The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation is responsible for policies, legislation, regulations, programs, and services that enable Alberta’s agriculture and food sectors to flourish. The ministry supports food safety, industry growth, diversification, investment, rural communities, irrigation, and agricultural societies. The Trade, Investment and Food Safety Division (TIFS) expands and diversifies Alberta’s food and bio-product manufacturing sector while providing food safety assurance. The Food and Bio-Processing Branch (FBPB) provides scientific and technical expertise, business development services and facilities to support product / process development and commercialization.

Role Responsibilities

Are you ready to help power the growth of Alberta’s meat processing industry? As an Industry Development Officer, you’ll be the go-to expert supporting processors, executives, and industry partners as they explore new markets, strengthen operations, and pursue strategic expansion. Your insights will influence decisions that shape the sector’s future.

Key responsibilities include :

  • Conduct market and technical research to support clients in assessing production, marketing, and financial strategies for their businesses.
  • Coach meat processors to identify and pursue business opportunities that enhance the value-added agri-processing industry.
  • Facilitate strategic investments and expansions to foster a competitive and sustainable meat processing industry.
  • Act as a resource and primary contact for senior personnel within the meat processing sector.
  • Deliver business advice, financial strategies, and regulatory information through seminars, webinars, and workshops.
  • Collaborate with interdepartmental teams and external committees to align efforts with Ministry policies and objectives.

Your expertise will contribute to the development of Alberta’s agri-business sector, ensuring its growth and competitiveness in domestic and international markets.

  • Qualifications

    Minimum Recruitment Standards :

  • University graduation in Agricultural, Food Science, Business, Marketing, Commerce or Economics or a related field, plus 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.
  • Equivalency : Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of :

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
  • Assets :

  • Strong understanding of the meat processing industry, including business management, marketing, and regulatory requirements.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with experience delivering seminars, webinars, or workshops.
  • Analytical and research capabilities, with the ability to evaluate business opportunities and conduct feasibility studies.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with industry stakeholders, government agencies, and interdepartmental teams.
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s food processing policies, programs, and services is an asset.
  • Office located in Red Deer at the Red Deer Provincial Building (4920-51 Street, Red Deer, AB T4N 6K8).

  • Hours of Work : 36.25 hours per week (permanent full time).
  • Monday to Friday (08 : 15 am-16 : 30 pm).
