Job Description Summary
The Senior Protection & Control Engineer works on T&D substations for AC, HVDC and FACTS projects, collaborating with designers, peer engineers and leaders. The engineer defines, designs, coordinates all technical aspects of protection and control, and oversees integration and optimization using lean techniques while ensuring safety, quality, schedule and cost criteria. They demonstrate acute attention to detail, a can‑do attitude and high customer responsiveness. The role may serve as project engineer manager for small to medium‑sized projects.
Essential Responsibilities
- Design protection schemes for various T&D substations, data centers, industrial and BESS applications including one‑line, three‑line, AC / DC schematics and relay settings.
- Maintain deliverables’ quality, delivery and cost.
- Lead a local or remote design team to develop panel and interconnect wiring, layouts and elevations.
- Review single‑line diagrams and detailed design for auxiliary systems : diesel generators, low‑voltage switchgear, AC / DC distribution panels, batteries and chargers.
- Evaluate interoperability, control features and communication protocols of IED protection relays to provide an integrated solution including SCADA, cyber‑security and telecom requirements.
- Be familiar with IEC 61850 process and bus architecture and its implementation for substations.
- Coordinate with SCADA engineers, substation physical engineers and control design staff to develop system integration of protection, control and monitoring systems; meet project specifications, cost control and schedule objectives.
- Interface with internal and external team members such as lead engineers, project engineers, electrical and physical designers, draftsmen, project managers, sourcing and support organizations.
- Interface with customer technical representatives to ensure smooth coordination with all stakeholders.
- Review power‑system load‑flow studies, fault studies, relay‑setting coordination and transient studies performed by other agencies.
- Train end‑users on theory, operational use and maintenance of integrated protection and control systems.
- Lead or support factory acceptance testing, site testing and commissioning.
- Develop outage, cut‑over and testing procedures.
- Define processes, procedures, perform root‑cause analysis, corrective actions and validate process control; support quality initiatives (ISO 9002).
- Work on development of proposals : writing and reviewing technical specifications, estimating design man‑hours and materials, sourcing vendor quotations, developing clarifications, exceptions and technical responses, and performing technical validation.
- Demonstrate leadership with humility, transparency and focus.
Qualifications / Requirements
Earned Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college.Minimum 15 years of experience with system protection schemes, relay selection, primary equipment interface requirements, operational analysis, communication systems and maintenance practices for transmission, distribution and generation protection in AIS and GIS substations.Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% (including international) for meetings and on‑site commissioning; compliance with company travel and tax policies.Eligibility Requirements

P‑Eng licence in one of the Canadian provinces.Extensive experience in protective relaying coordination and practices; good understanding of circuit breakers, fuses, switchers, transformers, shunt reactors, capacitor banks, harmonic filters, HVDC and FACTS systems used for power‑flow control, fault detection and isolation.Fluent in English.Experience in technical problem solving and mastery of sec engineering discipline (process, tools and technical aspects).Demonstrated ownership, accountability, judgment, decision‑making and passion for the functional role.We deliver integrated project solutions to enable large scale electrification and support our customers’ needs.
