PLA 1651 H1S : Real Estate Development

Course Description : The purpose of this course is to provide students with a fundamental background and basic skill set to understand the real estate development business and its interrelationships with urban planning. The course provides an overview of the real estate development industry, the development process, and the planning process. It covers the financial basis for development projects, the participants, the market search procedures and the financing of development. It also addresses the interface of the industry with the public sector. The course attempts to provide some understanding of the complexity surrounding real estate development and will introduce a level of quantitative and qualitative thinking sufficient to deal with the myriad of decisions that confront the real estate developer.

Class Schedule : Wednesdays, 5 : 00pm to 7 : 00pm

Sessional dates of appointment : January 1, 2025 – April 30, 2025

Salary : Sessional Lecturer I - $9,457.89; Sessional Lecturer I Long-term - $9,930.79. Sessional Lecturer II - $10,121.76; Sessional Lecturer II Long-term - $10,326.61; Sessional Lecturer III - $10,362.76; sessional Lecturer III Long-term - $10,570.01

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications : Expert knowledge and professional experience in real estate development and the planning process is required. A graduate degree in planning, real estate development or a related discipline is required.

Preferred Qualifications : Expert knowledge and professional experience in real estate development and the planning process is required, preferably in both the public and private sectors. Previous graduate level teaching experience would be considered an asset.

Brief description of duties : Preparing course outline, syllabi and lectures; developing and administering grading, course assignments, tests and exams; exam invigilation; holding regular office hours, and submitting all final grades.
