Occupational Therapist/Physical Therapist Assistant - Orthopaedics

Duties & Responsibilities

The primary role of the OT/PT Assistant is to implement therapeutic programs for patients as assigned and/or supervised by the Occupational Therapist and/or the Physical Therapist. This includes the management of patient-related equipment and therapeutic tools.

  • Able to work effectively as a member of an interprofessional team, collaborating with other disciplines to provide comprehensive patient care.
  • Contributes to the academic mandate of the organization as an educator, resource or support for staff, students and members of the academic and professional community.
  • Identifies and addresses educational needs for patients and their families.
  • Demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional development in order to continue to provide optimal patient care.
  • Is committed to, and participates in, ongoing quality improvement in the organization.
  • Provides patient care in accordance with all professional and organizational standards.

The primary role of the successful incumbent will be that of a Physiotherapy Assistant; however, he/she may be required to perform Occupational Therapy Assistant duties on an as‑needed basis.

Must be willing to work 8‑hour shifts, exclusively on Saturdays and Sundays as directed by the Program.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from a recognized and accredited combined OTA/PTA program (or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
  • Ability to modify interventions quickly in accordance to changes in patient status required.
  • Ability to carry out directions of therapists.
  • Independent decision‑making skills required.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as an effective interdisciplinary team member.
  • Willingness to participate/lead health service councils and task groups.
  • Motivated to practice in accordance with the mission and vision of hospital/health service.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing education and personal development.
  • Good work and attendance record required.
  • Excellent time management, organizational and prioritization skills as relates to patient care.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and involvement with own profession (e.g. membership with professional association, etc.) preferred.
  • Current CPR certification.
