Reporting to the Supervisor, Aquatics and Programming, the Summer Student, Assistant Head Lifeguard position is responsible for :
- Responsible to the Supervisor, Aquatics & Programming for teaching, guarding, training and providing a safe enjoyable aquatic environment for the general public.
- Ensure that the provisions of the Health Protection and Promotion Act Ont. Reg. 565 Public Pools are adhered to.
- Lifeguard and assume responsibility for bathers in the pool and changeroom areas.
- Instruct adults and children in all phases of water safety. Teach and evaluate, Lifesaving Swim / Lifesaving Advanced level programs when requested.
- Ensure that all rules and regulations are carried out in a courteous and firm manner. To promote a professional public image and deal with problems which may arise. Provides information and advises Aquatic Head Lifeguard accordingly.
- Be prepared to perform water rescues, first aid, current resuscitation methods and other emergency procedures when required.
- To actively participate in daily in-service training sessions and staff development programs conducted by the supervisor.
- Teach, conduct and participate in specialized programs when requested, i.e.. (synchro, speed swimming and diving competitions).
- Ensure that all candidates in your class leave the pool area before you continue your next class. No class or anyone member of the class should be left unattended on the pool deck.
- Perform general maintenance duties when necessary, i.e.. Cleaning washrooms, equipment room, pool office.
- Responsible for checking equipment on a daily basis and informing the supervisor if there is a problem.
- To maintain necessary current aquatic certifications and provide Supervisor, Aquatics & Programming with such documents.
- Attend clinics to upgrade technical knowledge and recertify qualifications when required.
- Responsible to wear proper uniform which includes one piece bathing suit and shorts (female) and appropriate length bathing suit shorts (male), lifeguard shirt, hat and whistle.
- Maintain the ongoing record of attendance and present progress cards to the candidate at the completion of the sessions.
- Ensure that the worksheets are properly maintained and presented to the supervisor at the completion of each session.
- Ensure that the Swim levels are progressively evaluated, and crests are awarded to the candidate at the time of completion.
- To represent the City of Cornwall as an active participant in annual lifeguard competitions. To further develop and increase life guarding skills and first-aid treatment. The lifeguard competition is a MANDATORY requirement for summer lifeguards.
- Assume the roles & responsibilities of the Aquatic Head Lifeguard in their absence.
- Other duties as assigned by the Aquatic Head Lifeguard, Supervisor, Aquatics & Programming or Manager, Recreation.
Required Qualifications :
Full-time day student at a recognized secondary or post-secondary institution and be returning to full time attendance the fall of 2026.Minimum of eighteen (18) years of ageCurrent Lifesaving Swim Instructor Certification.Current National Lifeguard Certification.Current Standard First Aid with CPR / AED level C. (must be from training agencies approved by the Ontario Ministry of Labour or the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.)Asset Qualifications :
Bilingualism is considered an asset.Previous experience in organizing, conducting and supervising aquatic programs will be preferred.Current Lifesaving & Emergency First Aid Instructor Certification.If selected for this role, you will need to provide :
