JOB DESCRIPTION

CISVA Educational Assistants (EA’s) are part of the school-based team providing educational assistance for all students. The role of the EA reflects the practice of inclusive education where all students are supported and entails supporting students, teachers and the curriculum. The primary focus of the EA is to facilitate the students to become more independent, engaged members of the classroom, and develop interdependence between students with and without special needs while encouraging the use of supports including assistance from the classroom teacher and other students.

EA’s work under the supervision of a certified teacher or other professional who is responsible for the conduct and management of the classroom or program, including planning, implementation and evaluation of the instructional program and student progress. This role is suited for people who work well in a team, have empathy and patience and can collaboratively create solutions to learning challenges. Because this is a faith-based school, this is a position for people who want to work in a Catholic setting.

Roles and Responsibilities :

Support students to maximize participation and learning in an inclusive environment

Supplement and extend the instructional and management functions of teachers and other professional personnel

Assist teachers in designing and implementing individualized or group communication skills, behavioural support, learning support or life skills

Assist in the collection of data, including observations and recording of academic and behavioural progress

Attend to and provide personal care as required

Interact with students in a professional and effective manner

Participate in school-based team meetings and IEP meetings as required

Preferred Education and Experience :

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent

EA certification

Current first aid course

Experience working with students and / or adults with exceptionalities
