- Development of new processes and technologies including design, engineered drawings, fabrication, site-prep, commissioning, start-up, and continuous improvement
- Lead in-house research and development as well as trials; oversee lab work with engineered biochar products, analyses of data, and presentation of analyses
- Communicating with management team and project partners to ensure that deadlines and budgets are being met, particularly with respect to optimization and expansion goals
- Provide direction to consulting engineers, fabrication shops, and internal staff as needed

Strong mechanical aptitude and eager to perform hands-on work as well as provide direction to external consultants and internal staff as neededAbility to effectively communicate, written and orally, technical concepts and hypotheses to a variety of different stakeholders from both technical and non-technical backgroundsSelf-motivated with strong organizational skills to manage multiple projects at a time; an entrepreneurial spirit and appreciation for a fast-moving start-up environmentEducation and Experience :
Engineering degree with 5 years of experience in progressive engineering roles, ideally with a background in mechanical engineering or a related fieldExperience with : PLCs, ladder diagrams, electrical design and drawings, mechanical equipment (e.g. motors, pulleys, gear boxes, pneumatic systems, pumps), automation equipment (e.g. instrumentation, thermocouples, solenoid valves, proximity sensors, analog / digital input / output signals), engineering design software (e.g. AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Excel), and thermodynamics / heat transfer in manufacturing processesLogistics :
Typical hours of work are expected to be 8am through 5pm on Monday through Friday, but the Engineering Manager is expected to work with a flexible schedule in order to achieve company objectives, which may mean different hours of work from time to time. This position is full-time, permanent, and includes salary, bonus, and health benefits, as well as recreational use of the properties owned and managed by our client. Our client is located in Haliburton County and the Engineering Manager will need to be present at the facility on a steady basis. Occasional travel within the region (e.g. to fabrication shops tasked with manufacturing equipment) will be required.Process Details :
The equipment operated by our client includes an automated continuous biomass handling and drying system, semi-continuous batch system for converting biomass to biochar with slow pyrolysis, and a series of mills for converting raw biochar to engineered biochar. The process is effectively closed-loop, meaning that the combustible gases produced during pyrolysis are captured and used to power the drying and pyrolysis systems. The majority of the equipment has been designed / developed in-house with the support of external fabrication shops.
