Job Description

The Community Development Coordinator provides assistance, guidance, and support to the Neighbours Community Homes (Neighbours) Tenants in identifying its own group needs and collective issues and in developing a community-based self-sufficiency in meeting those needs. The Community Development Coordinator assists in the identification of larger social issues and liaises with other interested grassroots groups and the Neighbours Tenants participants and staff to facilitate change.

The incumbent provides organizational assistance and support to the participants in advocating regarding the needs of low-income people living with mental illness, and collaborates with, and assists like-minded organizations that address needs and their solutions. The Coordinator provides support to internal Tenant initiatives such as the Tenant and Participant Advisory Committee (TPAC) through activities determined by the committee.

This position reports to the Program Manager and will work with other members of the senior management as requested. This staff will work with the community of interest represented by the Neighbours Tenants on a day-to-day basis and assist by imparting skills, knowledge and information regarding housing, homelessness, income support, poverty and other issues identified by the Tenants and in consultation with the Program Manager.

Job Requirements

  • Undergraduate Degree in Social Work, Social Services, or related fields.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in serving people living in poverty who have experienced homelessness and/or precariously housed and have mental health and/or addiction issues.
  • Excellent communication (listening, verbal and written), interpersonal, problem solving, life skills, coaching, budgeting, conflict resolution, and crisis prevention/intervention skills.
  • Knowledge of Mental Health Recovery Approach, Harm Reduction Principles, Residential Tenancies Act, Mental Health Act, Ontario Human Rights Code, Personal Health Information Protection Act, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act.
  • Knowledge and experience working with individuals facing multiples barriers and with diverse communities/
  • Strong culture competency and socially inclusive practices.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Previous experience in adult teaching is advantageous.
  • Proficiency in lesson planning, computer skills, communication, presentation and organizational abilities is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Work and PowerPoint, virtual meeting platforms and online information searches.
  • Strong organizational, time management and research skills.


Job Responsibilities

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

OPERATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Community Development
  • Work with Tenants to identify and address issues, access resources and seek opportunities for collaboration.
  • Provide administrative support to TPAC.
  • Participate in and represent the organization at external committees and forums.
  • Produce a quarterly magazine of material written and edited by the Tenants and published at least three times a year. Additionally, work with the staff to produce a monthly Tenant newsletter of events, activities, and relevant information.
  • Work on leadership development activities with identified members.
  • Liaise and develop working relationships with grassroots community-based groups.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and papers on specific topics of interest to the Tenants, Program Manager, Director of Support Services, Chief Services Officer, Chief Executive Officer and the Board of Directors.
  • Research issues pertaining to homelessness, mental health, community development and other related areas as required.
  • Provide rights-based education and encourage Tenants to play an active role in civic life.
  • Advocate and participate in forums and other activities (such as writing to or meeting with elected officials) that attempt to influence government policy as it affects people with mental health and addiction issues.
  • Keep the Manager informed and up to date on relevant issues.
  • Organize and facilitate group activities and community events, such a building meetings, life skills programs, meal programs, social recreation programs, and organizational events.
  • Encourage Tenants to improve overall building environments such as cleanliness, prevention of trespassers, personal safety concerns, noise reduction, fire safety, and physical appearance.
  • Inform Tenants and encourage their participation in organizational and community activities.
  • Identify and encourage Tenants to pursue leadership opportunities.
  • Encourage Tenants to become members of the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Manager or Senior Leadership Team.
Administration
  • Write notes and incident reports for Tenants into Information Software Database (Treat).
  • Maintain necessary documentation for tenancy management and workplace inspections.
  • Maintain confidentiality and obtain consents when sharing information except in emergency situations.
  • Provides administrative support and liaison with an external social action committee including tracking and disbursing expenses.
  • Prepares and submits own travel and expense sheets monthly.
  • Participate in internal committees and/or activities relating to the organization (IE staff, Annual General Meeting, social recreational events, etc.).
  • Maintain statistics, files, timesheets and regular reports.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Residential Tenancies Act (RTA), Mental Health Act, the Child and Family Services Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), Social Housing Reform Act, and Ontario Fire and Building Codes.
  • Model the organizational values, policies and professional ethics, and demonstrate commitment to the strategic direction.

  • Commitment to improve professional knowledge to recognize trends and issues and deal with them effectively.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with allied community agencies and professionals and participate in community committees and internal Neighbours committees as required.
  • Comply with the policies of Neighbours including those pertaining to the confidentiality of client information.
  • Represent the agency in a positive manner with clients, colleagues and the community at large.
  • Attend regular supervision meetings with the Program Manager for the purpose of reviewing work expectations and performance evaluation.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Exposure to household pests, bodily fluids, individuals experiencing crisis, individuals who may be under the influence of substances, cleaning chemicals, and some smoking environments.
  • Working hours are 35 hours per week. Operate independently and work flexible hours including weekends and evenings as required by programming needs.
  • Requirement to travel to and work from other Neighbours locations as required
