Overview

Job Title : Youth Program Supervisor.

Program : Youth Program (FLY).

Employer : Shuswap Children’s Association.

Reports To : Youth Program Coordinator.

Job Summary :

Shuswap Children’s Association, originally the Shuswap Exceptional Children’s Association, was founded in 1982 by a group of parents of children with support needs who found they were unable to access services for their children. They were joined by community professionals, service providers, and others who shared the goals of the parents.

As a leader within the organization and the community and under the direction of the policies and procedures outlined in the Shuswap Children’s program manuals, it is the responsibility of the Youth Program Supervisor to ensure the provision of services and support to children, youth, and their families. Under the direction of the Youth Program Coordinator, the Youth Program Supervisor plans and implements the social and recreational activities of the FLY Youth program.

Responsibilities

  • FLY Youth Program : Assist with receiving and managing program referrals, meeting and communicating with families to determine their eligibility for program enrollment.

In collaboration with the Youth Program Coordinator :

  • Plan and implement social and recreational activities for youth.
  • Meet and work collaboratively with families to determine the needs of the youth and family.
  • Develop and incorporate clear goals for both the group and unique individuals.
  • Develop and implement structured and creative activities designed to increase communication skills, social and interpersonal skills, life skills, and safety training within the community and interpersonal relationships.
  • Develop support plans with other team members.
  • Ensure youth’s goals are developed in cooperation with their families and that families are key participants in any decision-making regarding their children.
  • Ensure goals are practical and easy to incorporate into the child’s daily life.
  • During the program, facilitate and encourage participant engagement to ensure success in a program that provides a variety of social and recreational activities.
  • Create a positive, safe environment and provide individual and group support during scheduled recreational activities.
  • Communicate and record changes in participant behaviour to the Youth Program Coordinator.
  • Employ preventative strategies and use a strength-based approach when interacting with youth.
  • Actively engage with youth and role model positive behaviours when leading activities.
  • Provide direct supervision and set healthy boundaries including physical, environmental, emotional, psychological and social to ensure participants’ safety.
  • Track program expenses and record participant attendance.
  • Promote clear, consistent, professional communication and relationship building among staff, youth and parents / guardians.
  • Implement appropriate protocols and procedures when conflict arises within the staff team, youth and / or families.
  • Participate in team meetings regarding FLY Program participants as required.
  • Use own vehicle to transport program participants as per SCA’s policies and procedures, mileage is reimbursed.
  • Assist older youth with the transition activities and preparation for adulthood, which includes designing programs with a focus on being safe, problem solving, financial management, mental health, community inclusion and developing overall independent living skills.
  • Family Support :

  • Assists in advocating for youth and families to ensure they obtain optimum services for their children, including optimum services at school and in the community.
  • Support families by developing and maintaining a positive relationship with their children & youth.
  • Provide information on services and resources, including educational, health and social opportunities for children & youth as required.
  • Keep up to date on resources and services available to children and youth with developmental challenges and their families in the community and beyond.
  • Community Responsibilities :

  • In collaboration with the Administration department and the Youth Program Coordinator, market and promote the Youth program in the community.
  • Support program connections within the community through field trips etc.
  • Participate in relevant community programs, services, and initiatives.
  • Utilize all available resources to assist families and children.
  • In collaboration with the Youth Program Coordinator, work with the School District and other specialists, professionals, and consultants to support children and youth in the Shuswap region and beyond.
  • Represent SCA in the community outside work hours as required.
  • Administration :

  • Assist with the hiring, mentoring, training, and scheduling of program assistants, summer staff, volunteers, and practicum students to work with Youth Group program participants.
  • Ensure all client files are up to date in Nucleus, stats, including intakes, documents, notes, medication tab, POMS and closing forms
  • Lead youth staff debrief meetings after each program session.
  • Ensure the maintenance of program and client records and statistics in a timely manner, including the inclusive reporting of daily and monthly notes, documents, updated family details, goals, all communications etc.
  • Ensure that all appropriate documentation is accurate, complete and meets the reporting requirements of Shuswap Children’s Association.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all client information.
  • In collaboration with other staff and service providers review client files and caseload as required.
  • Ensure maintenance of program equipment and supplies, including maintenance of inventory.
  • Implement the policies and procedures of the FLY program in accordance with the philosophy and policies of the Shuswap Children’s Association.
  • Attend job related meetings, including Shuswap Children’s Association Staff meetings.
  • Maintain a professional and creative attitude through job-related training as required.
  • Education, Training and Experience :

  • Relevant education and / or experience working with children and youth with support needs.
  • Relevant education and / or experience working with families and children.
  • Education and / or experience in providing staff supervision, training, and support.
  • Education and / or experience in child and youth mental health is considered an asset.
  • Education and / or experience in assisting youth with the transition to adulthood.
  • Non-violence crisis intervention or Mandt Training.
  • Experience working with Nucleus and databases is considered an asset.
  • Experience analyzing data and trends is considered an asset.
  • Experience in program management is considered an asset.
  • Experience in planning and delivering staff and community training is considered an asset.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities :

  • Knowledge of and commitment to the principles and practices of family centered care.
  • Ability to be sensitive to the needs of families, which change over time.
  • Creative and flexible approach to supporting families.
  • Possession of a non-judgmental, positive, and stereotype-free attitude toward persons with disabilities and their families.
  • Understands and demonstrates respect for the diverse values and cultures of the families involved with the program.
  • Strong interpersonal skills that include the ability to work and communicate and collaborate effectively with staff, the Board of Directors, clients, community members, and other service providers.
  • Possess a comprehensive knowledge of services, programs, and resources available to families both in the community and elsewhere.
  • Ability to work effectively and respectfully with other Shuswap Children’s Association staff and parents / guardians.
  • Good communication, administrative, organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good planning, financial management, time management and organizational skills.
  • Computer skills, including good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and client database software.
  • Ability to lead program staff.
  • Ability to manage day-to-day program operations.
  • Ability to effectively train staff and others, including child / youth specific training.
  • Ability to work independently, under direction and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to work effectively with children and youth with developmental challenges.
  • Ability to work under a family-centered model.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety of service providers and activity groups.
  • Ability to advocate for families and children.
  • Knowledgeable about community & child care services.
  • Requirements :

  • Valid Class V BC driver’s license.
  • Valid Class IV BC driver’s license is considered an asset.
  • Must be able to provide own transportation.
  • Criminal Record screening.
  • Current First Aid Certification, including C.P.R.
  • Food Safe Level 1.
  • Hours of Work :

  • This is a permanent part-time position. Hours of work vary depending on the season with a minimum of 21 hours / week up to a maximum of 35 hours / week. Evening, weekends and flexible work hours are required in order to meet the needs of the program, families and caregivers.
  • Hourly wage range is $26.57 - $32.70. Starting wage will commensurate with experience.
