Take the next step in your career and join Osler’s Intellectual Property Department in our Ottawa office. We are seeking all seniorities of Patent Agents, including Junior or Patent Agent Trainees with a background in software, electronics, or computer-related subject matter, who is either already qualified, or looking to train to become a certified Canadian Patent Agent. The successful candidate’s main responsibilities will include drafting and prosecuting patent applications, primarily in relation to mechanics, electronics, or artificial intelligence / software / computer-related technologies. In this position you will have the opportunity to work with Canada’s largest Emerging and High Growth (EHG) practice group.
Responsibilities
Drafting and prosecuting patent applications, primarily in relation to mechanics, electronics, or AI / software / computer-related technologies.
Collaborating with clients and internal teams to understand invention disclosures and develop robust patent strategies.
Engaging in patent prosecution activities in Canada, with potential exposure to worldwide prosecution as appropriate.
Position Requirements
Advanced degree (M.Sc., preferably Ph.D.) in electrical engineering, physics, computer sciences, software engineering or related area
Dedication to high quality work product with strong attention to detail
Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment while providing top-quality client service
Superior time-management and organizational skills to efficiently multi-task and prioritize competing demands
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, both with internal and external clients
Three or more years of relevant work experience and exposure to patents, gathering of intellectual property disclosures in the relevant technical area
Exposure to a wide array of technologies, and proficiency with the basic understanding of patent structure and specification writing in other technical areas (e.g. simple mechanical device / apparatus) is an asset
Basic knowledge of Canadian patent practice, including recent Canadian Patent Law changes, or a willingness to study and learn all aspects of these fields
Some experience with managing client relationships; any previous experience coordinating worldwide prosecution of patent portfolios would be an asset
If not already a Patent Agent, expectation to study as a Class 3 Patent Agent Trainee, fulfill the training and certificate requirements, with the eventual result of becoming a Class 1 Registered Canadian Patent Agent in the CPATA
