Overview
The Warehouse Operations Manager I is responsible for the efficient day-to-day operation of the warehouse with emphasis on management of warehouse personnel and implementation of warehouse action plans. This role oversees a facility totaling between 100,000 and 500,000 sq. ft. Responsibilities include tracking and recording equipment hours, ensuring equipment maintenance schedules are followed, and conducting employee meetings. This position reports to the General Manager of the Distribution Center.
Responsibilities
- Operations Management: Develops a strategic plan with the General Manager to ensure efficient and cost-effective operation and facility utilization.
- Ensures efficient shipping and receiving work schedules to meet operational goals.
- Directs the operations of warehouse supervisors and warehouse personnel.
- Oversees inbound and outbound shipments to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Audits compliance of internal and external SOPs.
- Ensures equipment is utilized efficiently.
- Reviews daily work objectives and determines productivity requirements to meet building objectives.
- Partners with other leaders to balance labor and ensure appropriate staffing levels for daily workload.
- Matches personnel skills to work requirements.
- Conducts workload analysis against labor hours and equipment.
- Plans long-term labor needs based on sales, forecasts and historical data.
- Makes recommendations to the General Manager on programs to improve warehouse operations.
Financials
- Understands how day-to-day decisions impact financial outcomes.
- Open to learning financial aspects of the business including budgeting, forecasting, reading GL, Flash, and P&L.
- Runs productivity and labor reports to analyze performance gaps.
Employee Relations/Development
- Ensures daily pre-shift meetings cover productivity, operational problems, forecasting workload, and relevant information.
- Ensures proper staffing and supports hiring for facility operations.
- Onboards new employees with required paperwork and a structured training schedule.
- Sets department and individual performance goals aligned with operational success.
- Maintains good HR practices with direct reports and adherence to corporate and department policies.
- Works with General Manager and Human Resources to resolve employee relations issues, discipline, problem resolution, and terminations.
- Provides feedback, coaching, guidance, and recognition to develop others’ skills.
- Supports employee development and talent selection.
- Acts as a role model for the department in line with corporate purpose, vision, and values.
- Provides regular coaching and feedback, conducts formal performance appraisals, and recommends and approves annual compensation increases.
- Stays current on information, tools, and systems to demonstrate commitment to self-development.
- Travels to other warehouses and participates in department or company meetings as necessary.
Safety and Security
- Ensures safe, clean, and efficient warehouse operation to meet service standards.
- Supports and participates in all safety initiatives within the facility.
- Implements safety and sanitation schedules to ensure compliance with corporate, OSHA, FDA, AIB or ASI standards.
- Performs safety observations to coach employees on safety procedures.
- Implements improvements to procedures and facilities to prevent recurring accidents.
- Prevents incidents and injuries by overseeing investigations, root cause analyses, and improvements.
- Manages equipment and coordinates maintenance with local vendors.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain, Business or related field preferred.
- 5+ years of supervisory experience in a warehouse or distribution environment.
- Experience with Warehouse Management Systems (Manhattan preferred).
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and warehouse/mechanical equipment.
- Working knowledge of OSHA, DOT, HAZMAT, FDA regulations and willingness to become certified as needed.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities.
- Experience with seasonal work forces is a plus.
- Interest in performance metrics, process improvement, and Lean/Six Sigma tools.
- Excellent talent management, team-building, and communication skills (verbal, non-verbal, and written).
- Excellent customer service skills with external clients.
- Excellent analytical and mathematical skills.
- Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.
- Ability and availability to work irregular or extended hours including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Physical requirements: stand/walk up to 10-12 hours; lift and move totes up to 50 pounds; regular bending, lifting, stretching, and reaching; ability to access all areas of the building.
- Able to work in environments with variable noise, lighting, and temperature conditions.
