Our client, a mission-driven non-profit organization, is seeking an experienced and strategic Financial Controller to lead its finance function. Reporting to the Executive Director and working closely with senior leadership and the Board, the Financial Controller will oversee all financial operations, ensure regulatory compliance, and provide financial leadership to support organizational decision-making and long-term sustainability.

Work model: 3 days onsite in Oshawa North, ON
Key Responsibilities
Finance Leadership & Financial Management
- Lead, manage, and oversee the daily operations of the Finance department
- Oversee full-cycle accounting, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, management reports, forecasts, and budgets
- Develop, implement, and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls
- Monitor financial performance and provide recommendations to support strategic decision-making
- Present financial results, budgets, and financial recommendations to senior leadership and the Board
- Ensure compliance with Canadian accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and internal policies
- Safeguard organizational assets and maintain effective financial controls
- Support the annual budgeting and financial planning process
- Build and maintain relationships with banks, auditors, and external stakeholders
- Supervise and mentor finance team members
Payroll Oversight
- Oversee payroll processing and ensure accuracy and compliance with applicable regulations
- Maintain payroll records including employee earnings, deductions, and accruals
- Ensure compliance with employment standards, organizational policies, and regulatory requirements
- Coordinate with HR on compensation changes, benefits, and employment updates
Audit & Compliance
- Lead and coordinate annual external audits, including preparation of schedules and supporting documentation
- Maintain audit readiness and ensure compliance with internal and external reporting requirements
- Conduct periodic internal reviews of financial processes and controls
- Implement audit recommendations and continuous improvement initiatives
Stakeholder & Organizational Support
- Collaborate with internal departments to support financial planning and operational effectiveness
- Provide financial guidance to leadership on policy, risk management, and operational decisions
- Support governance requirements and financial reporting to key stakeholders
Qualifications
Education & Professional Designation
- CPA designation is required. Prior non-profit experience is highly desired
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Economics, or a related field
Experience
- Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Financial Controller or in a similar leadership role
- Progressive experience in financial management and accounting operations
- Experience supervising or managing finance staff
- Experience in not-for-profit, education, or mission-driven organizations is an asset
Technical Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of Canadian accounting standards and financial reporting
- Experience with accounting and payroll systems
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and presentation skills
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail
- Ability to build strong relationships with leadership and stakeholders
