Job description

About the Role

Reporting to the Aquatic Centre Supervisor, the Aquatic Program Student Leader is a senior student responsible for leading and assisting day-to-day operations of aquatics programs. By overseeing the delivery of lessons or leadership programs on the weekend and weekdays, which includes coaching and mentoring swim instructors and ensuring participant outcomes are being met, the Aquatic Program Student Leader is contributing to the success of the program. This also includes assisting in program development and delivery, staff training and development, instructor evaluations, program assessment, interacting with participants and parents, and resolving issues in a timely fashion. This position will also contribute to the development of recognition programs for participants and instructors, and other projects to enhance the program and MRU Aquatics overall. The Aquatic Program Student Leader will also assist in the preparation and delivery of aquatic leadership courses. This position works closely with the other Aquatic Program Student Leaders.

The Aquatic Program Student Leader role will focus on adhering to the standards of Mount Royal University Cougars Athletics and Recreation and the Lifesaving Society to ensure an optimal experience for students and members. This position will provide invaluable opportunities for those seeking supervisory and facility management experience, programming, and exposure to the field of recreation administration.

This is a flexible position, and the work schedule is variable and may include an irregular schedule of not less than three (3) hours per shift and up to thirty-five (35) hours per week. This position will end April 23, 2027.

Responsibilities

1. Program Leadership and Delivery (50%)

  • Oversee and support the delivery of swim lessons and aquatic programs to ensure quality instruction aligned with Lifesaving Society and MRU Cougars Athletics and Recreation standards.

  • Mentor, coach, and provide feedback to swim instructors to ensure participant outcomes are met and instructional consistency is maintained.

  • Adapt supervisory approaches to meet diverse learning needs and abilities.

  • Contribute to a safe, inclusive, and engaging aquatic environment for all participants and staff.

2. Staff Supervision, Training, and Development (20%)

  • Collaborate with other Student Leaders and supervisory staff to plan and deliver staff orientations, in-services, and term meetings.

  • Provide peer mentoring, guidance, and on-deck leadership for instructors to foster continuous improvement and confidence.

  • Conduct semesterly performance evaluations to assess swim instructor competencies.

  • Assist with the hiring and onboarding of aquatic staff.

  • Support staff recognition programs.

3. . Communication and Engagement (15%)

  • Communicate effectively and professionally with staff, participants, and parents to foster a positive and welcoming environment.

  • Participate in Cougars Athletics and Recreation engagement events to promote community involvement and program visibility.

  • Assist in developing social media content to highlight programs, achievements, and upcoming opportunities.

4. Administration and Program Support (10%)

  • Complete course and participant administration, including processing rosters and maintaining accurate attendance and performance records.

  • Track aquatic equipment inventory, ensuring all materials are cleaned, organized, and in good condition.

  • Support term projects as assigned and assist in the development and delivery of new aquatic programs and initiatives.

5. Leadership Development and Other Duties (5%)

  • Participate in leadership development opportunities and staff training events.

  • Support the Aquatic Centre Coordinator, Supervisor and other Student Leaders in special projects, promotional activities, and operational initiatives as assigned.

  • Assist with special events, promotional activities, and staff training sessions as requested.

Qualifications

  • Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard certification or SwimAbilities certification and a valid Standard First Aid with CPR-C/AED.
  • Preference is given to applicants that also hold multiple of the above-listed certifications as well as National Lifeguard, and are current students.
  • Availability to work days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
