The Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of geotechnical engineering, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2025.

Candidates must have a PhD in civil engineering or a related discipline by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates with research and teaching expertise in geotechnical engineering . Applicants must have strong technical expertise in a focus area, as well as an interdisciplinary approach to research, while having the ability to collaborate synergistically. Research themes of focus include, but are not limited to, advanced computational modeling, off-shore, coastal, harbour, or port topics, unsaturated soil mechanics, engineering design of large dams for water or mine waste tailings, cold region engineering, or foundation systems. Candidates are strongly encouraged to provide a vision how their research aligns with engineering practice, enhances the resiliency of civil infrastructure or communities, or addresses the impacts of anthropogenic climate change.

Candidates must indicate how their expertise would complement and extend existing research, undergraduate and graduate teaching, strengthening the impact of the Department . It is preferred that candidates have an undergraduate degree in engineering and be eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer.

The successful candidate is expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level and to establish an outstanding, competitive and externally funded research program. The candidate will also be involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, and departmental service.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, their statement of research vision and accomplishments, presentations at major conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels must be demonstrated by teaching accomplishments, and the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement (3-page limit) highlighting previous experience in teaching or teaching-related activities (as listed below), sample course syllabi (either of courses delivered by the candidate or planned), teaching evaluations, or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, student mentorship, or excellent conference presentations or posters. Professional or lived experiences that enhance the ability to teach a diverse student body are highly valued.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
