Job description

Director

Alberta Bureau for International Education (ABIE)

Calgary, Alberta

The Alberta Bureau for International Education (ABIE) is a newly created and incorporated not-for-profit organization that provides a central voice for participating post-secondary institutions across Alberta, one that acts on their behalf to advance the international education sector in the province. In today’s interconnected world, Alberta’s post-secondary sector plays a vital role in equipping students for their future as global citizens. To this end, ABIE supports building and expanding the capacity of Alberta post-secondary institutions to support increased global engagement, international student recruitment, and international learning opportunities for Albertans. ABIE will position Alberta as a top education destination for international students and focuses on growing and diversifying international student enrolment in the province.

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Director plays a pivotal role in shaping and acting on the priorities as outlined in the Alberta Bureau for International Education’s (ABIE’s) vision, strategic and operational plan. As ABIE being a start-up organization, the incumbent’s accountabilities are broad and comprehensive and require strong collaboration with the ABIE team members. This role requires effective results-oriented leadership and management, leveraging influence and collaboration internally and externally to advance priorities and demonstrate system-wide impact. The Director will facilitate a wide range of international education activities with key stakeholders, requiring a high-level of diplomacy, political acumen and cultural sensitivity. The breadth of international education priorities may include global partnership expansion, capacity building, mobility, offshore education and student recruitment. The role will be the point of contact for Deans / Directors and heads of international and international community to support execution of engagement activities, provide guidance to post-secondaries, and ensure a high standard of accurate and responsive support for advancing Alberta’s post-secondary priorities.

The Director will have a significant impact on the general perception of the ABIE requiring a high level of visibility, leadership, as well, personal contact and relationship building using a service-oriented approach. This role is a demanding and high paced position, as the Director is expected to take initiative, work fluidly and independently under the guidance of the Executive Director with little direction. The Director will bring a high degree of professionalism, accuracy, and sound judgment.

This role will be based in Calgary with some travel domestically within Alberta, across Canada and abroad.
