Wataynikaneyap Power PM Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of FortisOntario Inc., acts as the Project Manager of Wataynikaneyap Power LP (“Wataynikaneyap Power”). Wataynikaneyap Power is a licensed transmission entity, majority-owned by a partnership of 24 First Nation communities in partnership with Fortis Inc. and other private investors. The partnership is an unprecedented undertaking and has constructed 1,800 kilometres of 230 kV, 115 kV, and 44 kV transmission lines and over 22 substations in northwestern Ontario. Located near Thunder Bay in our Fort William First Nation, ON office, Wataynikaneyap Power is currently recruiting for a talented :
Manager, Health, Safety & Environment
Full-Time Permanent Position
The Manager, Health, Safety & Environment will report to the Director, Operations & Engineering, Wataynikaneyap Power PM Inc. This role will provide leadership, direction and support in all areas related to health and safety, while focusing on worker and public safety and compliance with occupational health and safety legislation in the ongoing operation and maintenance of Wataynikaneyap Power’s transmission system. This role will also be responsible for ensuring the company has strong stewardship of the Environment in all its work activities that interact or have the potential to impact the land or environment. In doing so, this position will oversee the development and maintenance of an enhanced Environmental Management System that reflects Wataynikaneyap Power’s Guiding Principles and Indigenous perspectives on environmental and land stewardship obtained through regular engagement, as well as understanding legislated requirements and industry practices.
Minimum Requirements :
- Degree, diploma and / or a combination of education and experience relevant to health, safety & environment, preferably in a regulated utility environment.
- Five (5) to ten (10) years’ experience in Health, Safety and Environmental Management, ideally in a regulated utility environment with significant First Nation interaction.
- Designation with the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering or the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals considered an asset.
- Demonstrated experience applying First Nations land ethic and environmental perspectives to environmental work programs.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating health, safety and environmental management work activities in a distribution and / or transmission electric utility system and basic knowledge of how these systems work.
- Significant experience in any of the following areas is ideal : Working in a regulated electrical utility environment.
- Understanding of KANAWAYANDAN D’AAKI (Anishininiwag Land Ethic).
- Working in First Nations homelands and remote areas with challenging access.
- Working with ISO 14001 and 45001 compliant or equivalent management systems.
- Developing or enhancing environmental management systems that are founded upon Indigenous laws, principles and customs related to protecting the natural environment.
- IHSA Electrical Safety Utility Rules and Utility Work Protection Code.
- Federal and provincial health, safety & environmental regulations applicable to utility operations in Northern Ontario.
- Candidates who speak / understand Anishinaabe or Anishininiimowin and / or have meaningful experience working with or for First Nation communities in Northwestern Ontario (preferred).
- Must have a valid Ontario “G” driver’s license and maintain a clean driver’s abstract.
