Responsibilities
- Collects, analyzes, monitors and tests a variety of gases and gas systems for odorant levels, as well as other contaminates, lubricants, combustibles and other products associated with gas operations in accordance with federal, provincial and company standards. Monitors quality of gas purchased by pipeline from transmission companies and tank car. Keeps accurate records, prepares reports, and advises appropriate groups of results. Computes odorant bulk tank filling schedule requirements.
- Research, develop and make recommendations regarding odorant levels in gas systems and arranges changes in injection rates; test procedures and methods; odorant blends; problems in the gas system; equipment for field and plant use; and the use, modification, or cancellation of odorizer and injector equipment. Continuously works with new company projects developing specifications for alternative energy such as bio gas plants.
- Organizes, operates and maintains the FortisBC laboratory including selecting, tendering and expediting equipment; assisting in the preparation of the annual budget for the lab by compiling data related to costs and equipment needs; maintaining adequate stocks of laboratory supplies; investigating analysis instrument equipment requirements for laboratory and field; and maintaining and calibrating a variety of analyzers and equipment.
- Develop and make recommendations regarding standards and procedures related to handling of chemicals and chemical analysis; emergency spill response; sample collection; call outs; troubleshooting; and odorant testing. Reviews levels of contaminants for inclusion in contract documents for natural gas and propane.
- Advises field personnel of gas concentration and odorization levels; instructs field personnel in method of collection and operation of specialized test equipment.
- Acts a liaison with Transport Canada inspectors regarding the application of transportation and dangerous goods regulations and with transmission companies regarding upstream fluctuations in factors affecting background odor and overall gas composition and quality. Liaises with and obtains services of related FortisBC departments and outside testing agencies.
- Carries out responsibilities in accordance with established safety rules and regulations and participates in workplace safety initiatives as required.
- Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties, including driving a vehicle, which do not affect the rating of the job.
